3 Ways You Can Use Gratitude to Increase Your Happiness.

Fall leading into Winter is my favorite season of the year. For me it’s a season of comfort, family, and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the perfect time of year to reflect on all of the positives in our lives and those things that truly matter in life: our families, relationships, and time shared together. For some this season can also bring up feelings of sadness, anxiety, or depression. Thankfully, there is research to suggest that expressing gratitude can lift the spirits and bring happiness.

 

I would like to suggest 3 ways we can use gratitude to have more happiness in our lives:

 

Take a few minutes each day to sit quietly and meditate or pray.

Being a mom of a toddler and a newborn it is not always easy for me to find quiet time. However, when I do, I feel recharged and ready to take on the day. Sometimes these quiet times are not scheduled: it can even be when I am in my car driving to work. The important part is to intentionally reflect on what you are grateful for in your life.

 

Replace negative thoughts with grateful thoughts.

I am amazed how powerful this simple practice can be. One small example of this would be coming home to a mess left on the kitchen counter. My first thought might be irritation but I can quickly turn it around to being grateful for the reminder that my husband prepared a healthy lunch for himself to take to work, and grateful that I get to support him while he serves and protects our community. The latter brings so much more appreciation and love for my husband. I have also found that the more I practice this thought process the more it becomes my first response.

 

Do not take time for granted.

As I watch my babies grow I am humbled by how quickly time passes. I want to soak up every moment with them. I love watching them experience so many things for the first time but also realize that there are so many ‘last times.’ When my son comes crawling into bed in the early morning hours to snuggle or my baby girl coos and laughs at me while I hold her in my lap I realize these are all moments that I want to cherish. Hold your family close and appreciate every moment.
